Gao Yu è nato a Guizhou nel 1981. Ha studiato all'Accademia delle arti del Sichuan dove si è diplomato nel 2003. Da subito il soggetto principale delle sue tele a olio sono stati i panda, non i pacifici orsi-gatto (xiong mao) originari della sua provincia (il Sichuan) ma delle grottesche caricature di panda aggressivi e violenti.
"Fin da piccoli – dice Gao – a scuola ci insegnano la propaganda del panda. Quest'animale è considerato un tesoro nazionale. Abbiamo addirittura creato una diplomazia dei panda: oggi ne regaliamo uno a Taiwan, domani al Giappone per favorire buoni rapporti. A ovest si conoscono poche cose della Cina, ma fra queste c'è sicuramente il panda. Per spezzare quest'immagine vuota ho cominciato a deformare i panda nei miei quadri"
"Oltrettutto odio i panda. Sono animali strani e pigri. Se non ci fosse l'ossessione dei cinesi per questi animali, i panda si sarebbero già estinti. Sono tra gli animali più difficili da far riprodurre".
La natura li ha condannati all'estinzione. I cinesi sono ossessionati dai panda. Gao nei suoi quadri li uccide o li dipinge come killer.
